JJBA 2023 | June 28-30, 2023

The second edition of the Young Bioacousticians Days took place from June 25 to 28, 2024 in Brest .

New this year: the organization of a pre-event consisting of a day of scientific mediation , open to all, dedicated to underwater bioacoustics. This day took place at the 70.8 Ocean Museum on June 25, 2024. Around 150 people (including schoolchildren) were able to enjoy this day.
Then the 3 days of conferences took place at the Moulin Blanc youth hostel. The event brought together about 75 participants (masters students, doctoral students, post-doctoral students and researchers) from 19 international countries !

Sonic dive into the heart of the oceans

A meeting between scientists and the public
around underwater bioacoustics

June 25, 2024 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

At 70.8 , Museum for the Ocean

Ateliers des Capucins - Brest (France)

Researchers specialized in bioacoustics (the study of animal vocalizations) from various French institutes are organizing a popular science day to discover the theme of ocean sounds .

Scientists invite visitors to dive as close as possible to marine species to understand how they use sound waves to communicate in their environment, long unfairly considered “the world of silence”.

Designed for young and old, this day will be an opportunity to meet bioacoustic researchers who will share the secrets of their profession.

On the program: Stands, Activities, Games, Conferences, ...

  • Workshop 1: Introduction to underwater sounds

  • Workshop 2 : Discovering the pinnipeds

  • Workshop 3 : Are cetaceans fish ?

  • Workshop 4 : Astrolabe Expéditions - Take part in scientific research!

  • Workshop 5 : Discovering the Iroise Sea

  • Workshop 6 : Art and Bioacoustics

  • Workshop 7 : Acoustics quiz

JJBA 2024

New this year: all the oral presentations were broadcast live on the JJBA Youtube channel.

Oral communications

    Oral communications of 15
minutes  are divided into different scientific sessions. Participants whose abstract has been accepted by the organizing committee will have the opportunity to present their recent scientific results.

Poster session

To introduce the session, each participant will start with a poster presentation (2 minutes per poster).

Plenary Conferences
Three plenary conferences of 45 minutes (+15 minutes of questions) will be held by experienced bioacousticians. These conferences will provide a unique opportunity for students and young researchers to attend presentation of major works in their field and exchange with established researchers.

Gaëtan Richard

Research engineer - SOMME

“My research focuses on the use of passive acoustics to better understand the behavioral ecology of marine mammals and to monitor their interactions with human activities, as well as the potential impacts of these activities.”

Camille Desjonquères

Research Associate CNRS - LECA

“I am an ecoacoustician, and my research involves studying the sound emanating from ecosystems to understand and develop indicators of the state and functioning of these ecosystems. While my research primarily focuses on sounds transmitted in freshwater environments, I also investigate sounds transmitted in the air and substrate (vibrations) in terrestrial environments.”

Megan Wyman

Postdoctoral Reasearcher - University of Zürich

“My research focuses on sexual selection and vocal diversity, investigating anatomical mechanisms of vocal production. In my previous studies, I analyzed acoustic communication in North American Bison, studied vocal production in polygynous deer for insights into speciation, and explored the impact of hybridization on species discrimination. Currently, I am examining vocal changes related to changes in social rank in meerkats, using various methods such as behavioral observations and anatomical scans.”

Workshops and Round-tables

Art & Bioacoustics

Combining art and bioacoustics is an original way of raising awareness of the sounds that surround us. In this workshop, scientists and artists will share their creative projects, whether visual art, sound creations, live performances or a mix of all these. Their aim? To raise our awareness of the soundscape in which we live, and even to take us on a sonic journey. In this workshop, we'll discuss their creations and how they go about creating their work.

Speakers:
Noémie Brun (oreille indiscrète)
Adèle de baudouin (Museum National d'histoire naturelle)
François Joncour (Sonars)

On Wednesday 25 June, we are delighted to invite sound designer Mélia Roger (Le Fresnoy - Studio national des arts contemporains) to present her audiovisual creation 'Tendre Phonocène’ throughout the day.

Workshops

General assembly
A general assembly will be helded on Friday, June 28 to discuss the future of the colloquium and ensure its sustainability. The objective of this general assembly is to present the colloquium project as a whole, to discuss the points to be improved based on the previous editions and to recruit volunteers to support the organization of next editions.

Social events
Regular breaks will punctuate the conference to promote scientific exchanges. A dinner of local specialties and a gala dinner will also be organized in order to create links between the participants. The transdisciplinarity being at the heart of this symposium project, the objective is to facilitate exchanges between scientists from different backgrounds in a friendly, enthusiastic and productive atmosphere.
